The Women’s 800 meters race features defending Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo of Kenya and 2009 world champion Caster Semenya of South Africa, who has been at the center of the complex gender debate. Their rivals are last year’s World champion Mariya Savinova of Russia and the rapidly emerging Ethiopian teenager Fantu Magiso who beat everyone at the Rome Samsung Diamond League meet in May.

Mariya Savinova of Russia wins Olympic gold medal in women’s 800 meters. Caster Semenya of South Africa made a late push to finish second in a season-best 1:57.23 and Ekaterina Poistogova of Russia was third in a personal-best 1:57.53.

2008 Beijing Olympics Women’s 800m Results
18-year-old Pamela Jelimo won the 800 meters at the 2008 Beijing Games to become the first Kenyan woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Pamela Jelimo took the gold in a time of 1:54.87. Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei clocked 1:56.07 to win the silver medal and the bronze medal went to Hasna Benhassi of Morocco.
