Results for 2012 London Olympics Women’s 5000 meters race are published below. The men’s and women’s 5000m races are two of the long distance events on the track. Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia holds the world record with 14:11.15 and the Olympic record holder is Gabriela Szabó (ROU) with 14:40.79.
Vivian Cheruiyot, who has dominated every major Championships 5000m race since finishing a disappointed fifth in Beijing, will be favoured for the gold medal on this occasion. Her main rival will be Ethiopian Meseret Defar, the 2004 winner in Athens and third in Beijing who she held off by 0.03sec in their clash at the Rome Golden Gala in May. Other important participants will be Kenyans Viola Kibiwot and Sally Kipyego, Ethiopian Gelete Burka, Portugal’s Sara Moreira and Russia’s Svetlana Kireyeva.

2008 Beijing Olympics Women’s 5000m Results
Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia won gold in both the 5000m and 10,000m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Dibaba clocked 15:41.40 for the gold medal. Elvan Abeylegesse of Turkey won the silver medal and Meseret Defar of Ethiopia took the bronze medal.
