In 1977, five hundred runners lined up for the first Spring Lake Five Mile Run at Spring Lake, New Jersey, USA. Since then the Spring Lake Five Mile Run has grown from a small local fun run into New Jersey’s largest road race and a nationally recognized event. Despite this growth the race has remained a low key, non-commercial event. In the past 10 years, the Friends of the Spring Lake 5, Inc. race raised over $600,000 for Spring Lake Recreation, the numerous volunteer groups that support the event and various charities.
The race has been recognized by Runner’s World Magazine as one of the top 100 races in America. This is a “must do” event with as many as 10,000 runners competing in this event.
