Course / Route Map

With the exception of the start and finish, the race is run almost entirely on Monument Avenue. It begins at Broad Street, located in the Fan Historic District. After several blocks, the race makes a left turn onto Monument Avenue. Runners see a total of six monuments during your run, mostly set in the middle of traffic circles; five of the six pay tribute to leaders of the Confederacy. The monument to Arthur Ashe, humanitarian and tennis star, was the last to be added. After 3 miles the course makes a U-turn for approximately 2 miles. After running through the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, the race ends on Franklin Street at the entrance of Monroe Park.

I have a question about time limits. This is my first race. Does it mean if you can’t run the race within that time that you cannot run?

The waves are simply a way of separating runners based on their speed so that a bunch of walkers don’t clog up the front lines. Since it is your first race just give your best estimate of how long you think it will take you. If you plan on walking slowly, then you can select the 120+ min.

Since most races require prior history to prove that you can finish in the time range you selected, you may be forced to select an “Open” time slot, or a “Joggers/Walkers” time slot. As long as you can finish in 2.5 hours you should be fine!

Good luck!
