Lilac Bloomsday Run 12K

Lilac Bloomsday Run is the world’s largest 12K race which takes place in Spokane, Washington, USA. Bloomsday is always the first Sunday in May, so the run takes place on the first Sunday of may. World-class runners and wheelchair racers compete for nearly $100,000 in prize money. Bloomsday has been a member of the ARRA and PRRO Circuits of major U.S. running events.

On May 1, 1977, over a thousand runners participated in the inaugural Bloomsday Run. In subsequent years the Bloomsday field continued to grow. The Lilac Bloomsday Run has had over 40,000 participants every year since 1986. A field of over 53,000 signed up for 2012 Bloomsday run.

Registration

You can register on the official website of Lilac Bloomsday Run 12K. The registration fee is $17* plus $1.69 online processing fee through April 21 and $35* plus $3.49 online processing fee April 22-28.

Mail-in entries must be postmarked by midnight Tuesday, April 16. You can register at Sports Authority locations in Spokane–15118 E. Indiana Ave. or 9620 N. Newport Highway–during normal business hours from March 26th until April 16th.

Bloomsday_elevationmapThe start line is on Riverside Avenue between Lincoln & Post Streets. The course starts in Downtown Spokane and heads northwest along the far west end of town, passes by Mukogowa Ft. Wright Institute and Spokane Falls Community College before heading up “Doomsday Hill” and back downtown to the Spokane County Courthouse.

Time Limits and Cutoffs

The course has a time limit of 5h 30 mins. The course closes at 1:30 p.m., or when the sweep vehicle passes, whichever comes first. If you complete the course after the finish line has closed and you don’t receive a T-shirt. Bloomsday will time finishers using B-tag timing by Chronotrack.

Water Stops

Water stations are located periodically along the course. Both sides of the street will have water. The 1st water aid station is at Greenwood Cemetery, the 2nd at Spokane Falls Community College, 3rd is at the top of Pettet (Doomsday) hill. The 4th is on Broadway & Nettleton. The 5th will be located past the finish line, before the T-shirt distribution areas.

Prize Money/ Awards

Age division winners will be listed in the official Bloomsday results supplement distributed a few days after the race. Age division awards and Washington Road Running Championship certificates will be mailed later in May.

The Lilac Bloomsday Run has been held in all kinds of weather, so dress accordingly. Average temperature at the start is approximately 50 degrees, but it has occasionally been in the high 70s. The run has also started with snow on the streets.
