Celestine Arambulo Wins Women’s Running Half Marathon

SAN DIEGO – (February 22, 2014) – Women took over the streets of San Diego this morning, running a beautiful scenic course on Harbor and Shelter Islands for the second Women’s Running San Diego Half Marathon and 5K benefiting the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation (ESBCF).  Mary Hart, former host of Entertainment Tonight and the national spokesperson for Edith Sanford took part in the new 5K as a member of TeamEdith™, ESBCF’s new engagement platform that helps participants raise funds to support genomics research to end breast cancer.

Starting and finishing in NTC Park in Liberty Station, the waterfront run benefitted the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation, a national nonprofit positioned to unlock the full potential of genomics to end breast cancer. One hundred percent of every dollar raised by the Foundation is invested in cutting-edge research to help transform breast cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship–and ultimately to raise the standard of breast cancer care for women and men everywhere.

“We look forward to raising awareness about our innovative new approach to breast cancer prevention and treatment at the Women’s Running Series,” said Kimberly Simpson, president of the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation.  “This race is a great platform to educate women about breast cancer and rally grassroots support for our genomics research that is helping to speed the way to the cures.”

Hart walked the 5K along with Susie Spanos, wife of San Diego Chargers owner Alex Spanos. Hart’s personal connection to the Foundation has family ties – her grandmother passed away from the disease when her mother was a young girl and her mother suffered from a rare form of breast cancer in her 70s, but has since recovered.

Kaiser Permanente doctor Celestine Arambulo was the first woman finisher in 1 hour, 26 minutes, 15 seconds.

Jessie Sebor, editor- in-chief of Women’s Running Magazine, placed second in 1:26:28, a personal best.

The Women’s Running San Diego Half Marathon is part of a national series of events uniquely catered toward women, combining a fun destination with scenic courses for the ultimate girls’ weekend getaway. The event, open to both runners and walkers, features exclusive perks such as glitzy two-in-one finisher medals, post-race treats like delicious cookies, celebratory champagne, and a rejuvenating Freshen Up Lounge.
