South Korea – Kenya’s world marathon champion Abel Kirui and New York City title holder Edna Kiplagat will lead the east African nation’s marathon team at August’s world championships in South Korea.
Men’s Team
- Abel Kirui – Kenya’s world marathon champion
- Vincent Kipruto – runner-up in Rotterdam
- David Barmasai Tumo – winner of Dubai Marathon
- Benjamin Kiptoo Kolum – Winner Paris Marathon
- Eliud Kiptanui – fourth in Rotterdam
Women’s Team
- Edna Kiplagat – New York City title holder, third in the London Marathon last April
- Philles Ongori – Rotterdam winner
- Sharon Cherop – third in Boston
- Prisca Jeptoo – Paris Marathon winner
- Caroline Rotich – fourth in Boston
Most of Kenya’s top marathon runners, including London and Boston Marathon winners Emmanel Mutai and Geoffrey Mutai, former London winner Martin Lel and Boston runner-up Moses Mosop, turned down invitations to the August 27-September 4 worlds in Daegu.
London Marathon champion Mary Keitany, the world leader, and Lydia Cheromei, winner of the Prague Marathon and fourth fastest this year, also decided to skip the world championships.
