Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie, the greatest distance runner of all-time with no fewer than 27 world records to his name, will be bidding for his fourth Bupa Great Manchester Run title though he will face tough challengers in Chris Thompson (GB), Craig Mottram (Australia), Sergey Lebid (Ukraine), Martin Fagan (Ireland) and Abderrahime Bouramdane of Morocco.

The women’s race should be just as electrifying with Britain’s Helen Clitheroe, who won 3000m gold at the recent European Indoor Championships in Paris, taking on compatriot Charlotte Purdue, who won the Great Ireland Run last month, as well as Christelle Daunay (France), Berhane Adhere (Ethiopia), Anna Incerti (Italy) and Sara Moreira (Portugal).

The 10k run – an IAAF Gold Label event – is a sell-out with 38,000 ordinary runners having signed up, many of them raising much-needed funds for an array of good causes.

BBC Two will screen live action from the Run between 10am and noon.
