Mumbai Marathon 2011

PRESS RELEASE: July 21, 2010

It’s that time of the year again that thousands and thousands of serious athletes, running enthusiasts and fitness conscious Mumbaikars have been waiting for. The launch of registrations for the eighth edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, Asia’s Largest and Richest Marathon is upon us.

As has been the practice for the past two years, registrations for Mumbai’s largest sporting and social extravaganza are being opened a little less than six months before Race Day. This is a well thought out initiative aimed at helping each participant achieve peak preparedness and derive optimum results in their personal quest for success.

However, as part of the constant endeavour from promoters Procam International to evolve and improve while providing the best possible running experience to each participant, it has been decided to open registrations in a phased manner for the eighth edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon to be run on January 16, 2011.

Registrations for the Full Marathon and Half Marathon in Mumbai’s largest and foremost sporting event will open on July 22, 2010, and close on August 21, 2010 or whenever running places are full, whichever is earlier.

Registrations for the Dream Run, the Senior Citizens Run and the Wheelchair Event will open on September 1, 2010 and close on September 25, 2010 or whenever running places are full, whichever is earlier.

Registration Website: http://www.procamrunning.in/scmm

In order to encourage the participation of serious runners in the full marathon and half marathon, it has also been decided to give preference to timed applicants, who can complete the full marathon distance inside six hours and the half marathon distance inside three hours. To give a fillip to women there will be a limited number of running places reserved for women applicants in the full marathon and half marathon. 250 places in the full marathon and 500 places in the half marathon will be reserved for women applicants.

Where an applicant does not fall under either of the above criteria, his/her application will be placed under the ballot process. Two thousand applications in the full marathon and 5000 in the half marathon will be placed in the ballot pool, from which 1,000 and 2,500 respectively will be confirmed under ballot.

  • Rs 600 will be the entry fee for the Full Marathon and Half Marathon and Rs 500 for the Dream Run.
  • Rs 300 will the entry fee for the Senior Citizens’ Run and the Wheelchair Event.
  • While the age eligibility for the Full Marathon and the Half Marathon is 18 years and above, it is 12 years and above for the Dream Run and the Wheelchair Event.

ENCOURAGING THE SERIOUS RUNNER:

Last year it was decided to compulsorily chip all athletes wishing to participate in the full and half marathons. Going a step ahead, various confirmation criteria have been

put into place for those desirous of participating in the same. This has been done to ensure that serious athletes, who have already completed the respective distances, and those who have been training hard and are confident of completing the full and half marathon distances, attempt these races.

Confirmation Criteria:

Timed applicant: For an applicant who has participated in an event and completed the distance of marathon within 6 hours and/or a half marathon within 3 hours. In order to be eligible under this criteria–

a. The running event you have participated in, must have been an event conducted under the aegis of your state/district athletic association or sports control board, or an AIMS ratified even.

b. The running event was conducted within two years prior to your application date,

c. You have attached the official timing certificate issued to you at this event along with this application form.

Women’s Quota: There are a limited number of running places reserved for women applicants.

Ballot pool: Where an applicant does not fall under either of the above criteria, or where an application cannot be confirmed under either of the two 2 above criteria, for whatsoever reasons other than the application being invalid, his/her application will be placed under the ballot process.  Applications will be randomly selected via an automated system and confirmed. Results of the ballot will be declared on the event website on Friday, 27th August 2010. Unsuccessful applicants will receive refund of their application fees by 30th November 2010. An amount of Rs. 30 will be deducted as processing charges.

3500 running places are on offer for the Full Marathon, while 11,000 places will be available for the Half Marathon. The Dream Run, including the Corporate Challenge, will accommodate 22,000 participants. 1800 entries will be permitted in the Senior Citizens’ Run, while 200 entries will be accepted for the Wheelchair Event, putting the total number of entries accepted at 38,500.

Nachiket, my understanding is that a half marathon certificate under 3 hours is sufficient for qualifying for the full marathon. I have never run a full marathon before myself, and have attached my half marathon certificate.

In terms of getting stuck, phone number can be an issue. The site, at least when I registered, was not accepting a mobile number (so I put my land line) and not accepting + and other symbols for the phone numbers. Besides the browsers, try to play with the phone numbers.

Hi Tanvir. I was planning to come for a vacation and to visit friends around the beginning of the year. Then I learned that the marathon was approximately the same time. I thought it would be an interesting adventure — though I’ll have to train here in the snow in December to stay in shape after the Chicago Marathon in October…

Also, I have an idea to write an article about the experience. Runners, running clubs, races, etc., are common here in the US, but I have no idea about India. I thought it would be interesting to learn and compare. Also, if the marathon in Chandigarh goes off on time, I may go to that one as well.

Re: the Hindi — I like trying to learn languages before traveling, so I was learning Hindi much like the Spanish I learned before visiting Spain. It’s unnecessary, but a lot of fun.

Hi Tanvir,

Your site and blog are a great source of inspiration for us. I had two queries regarding the registrations for SCMM 2011:

1) I have a timed certificate for a half marathon for 2 hrs. Can i use this to get into the full marathon or would i have to register for the half?
2) When do we have to upload the certificate? I did not get to the page where i can do it.

Thanks
Nachiketa

Nachiketa, I doubt if the half cert can be used for the full (though I believe they should seriously consider accepting that). I suggest you go for Full, upload this cert anyway and let them decide. If not, you go through the ballot anyway. As for the upload, I had same issues with my Chrome, and moving to Firefox fixed it. Try different browsers. I am hearing of issues with IE.

Hi Tanvir. Thanks for all of the updates on the marathon — very, very helpful. I registered today, but my last marathon was five years ago so I’m waiting in the general pool. We’ll see what happens. Perhaps I’ll see you there — good luck with your training.

You are welcome, Kirk. My hunch is that most of the people applying for the full marathon will make it through the ballot, so all the best. So, what brings you here, just the marathon, or your encounters with Hindi?

Tanvir,
I am confident of completeing under 6 hours. my first marathon is going to be KTM ( this is from your suggestion , not sure if you would remember)

So I do not have a previous certificate feel a bit disappointed, I hope it is not too bad.

Thanks for your updates!

Dear sir,
I am based in Manila, Philippines and have run almost all the earlier editions of this run; have been eagerly looking forwrd to Registraions opening for the 2011 half marathon.
However, on the on-line registration page, after I confirm that I have my picture and timing certificate on the pop-up, the next page does not load, it shows error on page.
Kindly look into it.
Second, please confirm that the timing showed in the certificate for the last Mumbai marathon is valid for this edition.
Thanks and regards

Sudipto, I just used Firefox browser to register and it worked. Maybe it is a browser issue since it did not work with Chrome browser for me. Last years SCMM certificate would be valid.
