Samuel Kosgei of Kenya won the Berlin BIG25 race in world record time, one of the most popular 25K races in the world. Kosgei triumphed in a time of 1:11:50. Countryman Gilbert Kirwa was second just 8 seconds behind while Terefe Maregu of Ethiopia was third in 1:13:16. Kosgei’s time bettered the previous record of 1:12:45 held by his fellow countryman Paul Kosgei.
In the women’s 25K run, pre-race favorite Mary Kietany of Kenya expectedly broke the 25K world record with her winning time of 1:19:53. Alice Timbilili finished 2nd and Pasalia Kipkoech 3rd, with Kietany ‘s victory margin about an astronomical 5 minutes! The previous best of 1:22.13 at the distance was set by Japan’s Mizuki Noguchi in 2005.
