Patrick Makau runs 4th Fastest Ever at Rotterdam Marathon

Patrick Makau of Kenya has won the 30th edition of the Fortis Rotterdam Marathon 2010 in a super time of 2:04:47, which is the fastest time of the year, and not too far from the crazy last year’s performance of 2:04:27 in which Duncan Kibet and James Kwambai finished in a dead heat. In that race, Makau was 4th in 2:06:14, which was his debut marathon too.

4th Fastest Marathon Ever!

The win by Patrick Makau makes him the 4th fastest marathoner ever. On the top is Haile Gebrselassie with the world record 2:03:59. He is followed by the two Kenyans who finished first and second at 2009 Rotterdam Marathon in 2:04:27, Duncan Kibet and James Kwambai, and now Makau occupies the 4th fastest spot.

It was a fast paced race from the start and all indications coming in were for a new world record and a sub 2:03:59 finish, atleast till the half way point. The second half was a tactical race, and probably slowed down the pace as well. For the record, this is the 12th consecutive win by a Kenyan at Rotterdam. 4 runners in all finished below 2:05:30, which is probably the first time this has ever happened (yes, it did not happen last year at Rotterdam!).

Koen Raijmakers was the fastest runner from Netherlands, the 30-year-old athlete from Cothen finished in a time of 2:11:09 and a PR.
