Two Oceans Marathon is a 56KM long ultra in the city of Cape Town in South Africa, and proclaimed as the world’s most beautiful marathon by its organizers. This year will be the 41st anniversary of this event. It is really huge in popularity, not just amongst South African runners, but internationally as well. This years event will see a record field of 20,000 runners taking part. The race has the following events.
- 56KM Ultra
- Half Marathon (21KM)
- Fun Runs (5K, 2.5K – a day before)
About 9,000 runners have registered for the ultra, while the half marathon will have 11,000 participants. The figures really make the Two Oceans Marathon the second largest ultramarathon in the world (Comrades Marathon being the largest, also in South Africa). Interestingly, both the Two Oceans Marathon, and the Comrades Marathon will see about 1,000 international runners take part, which really dwarfs the rest of the ultra marathons worldwide in terms of international and overall participation.
Route
From the start in Newlands along the Main Road to Fish Hoek, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Hout Bay, Constantia Nek, Rhodes Drive, and Union Avenue to the finish at UCT. An IAAF graded course measurer has certified the route.
Cutoff
The ultra marathon race (56KM) has a cutoff time of 7 hours. The Half Marathon has a 3 hour cutoff time. Finish after this, and the organizers keep your medals!
