Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea has just won the 20th edition of the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon 2010, smashing the world record half marathon time of Sammy Wanjiru of 58:33 by 10 seconds to finish in 58:23. Kenyan pair of Sammy Kitwara and Emmanuel Mutai finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Here’s what a Wikipedia article had to say for him, so true!
“He does not use a sprint finish to win races: his strategy relies upon a combination of efficient running and fast pace setting … He has found most of his success over the half marathon distance, with three consecutive victories in the World Half Marathon Championships from 2007 to 2009.”
An estimated 30,000 runners took part in this event, which has been really popular with the top elite runners over the years. The fast course at Lisbon has produced some really fast times with 59:05 finish by Paul Tergat in 2000 standing as the current course record.
