The Xiamen International Marathon in China kicked off as the first big marathon of the new year 2010. This event has been accredited with the IAAF Gold Label for Road Races, an indication that this event is right up there with the best marathons of the world.
This year saw a participation of 48,000 runners in the various events on the day, which included the Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10KM and 5KM races as well. The race was run in some great weather, with temperatures under 13 degrees Celsius, along the beautiful seaside route. 19 year old Ethiopian Feyisa Lilesa won the Mens race in 2:08:47, 4 seconds under the current course record. The women’s race was won by another Ethiopian, Baysa Atsede, who finished in 2:28:53.
