IIT Kanpur Golden Jubilee (Ultra) Marathon – Feb 21, 2010

December 11, 2009

IIT Kanpur is conducting a 50K ultra on Feb 21st. Though it is a IITK alumni and family event, they have invited Delhi Runners to come to the event as well. I am planning to be there on Feb 21st, along with more folks from our group.

BTW, this is not any tamasha run, these guys are serious, and their training sessions have been happening since atleast a couple of months in their campus, so I expect good arrangements.

Details from the organizers below.

IIT Kanpur Golden Jubilee (Ultra) Marathon – February 21, 2010

IIT Kanpur will celebrate its Golden Jubilee (50 years) in a unique way. We will organize many people to run 50 km on February 21, 2010. This is a lofty challenge that will be undertaken by many individuals from the greater IIT Kanpur fraternity of students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni. There are several other runs being planned. The signature 50K will also have a relay component, allowing people to form teams to complete this distance. In all, the races planned for this day are

People can run, walk, crawl to the finish line but are not allowed to use any mechanical devices. There will be several prizes given in all categories. We encourage people of all ages to participate. For the interested people, there is a Training program conducted on campus.

Organizers answer some of our questions

1. What time can we expect the event to start

6 am will be the regular start. 5 am will be the start for slow runners.

2. When do online registrations start, will an online payment system be setup

Online registrations should start by the end of December. There is no provision for online payment, but payment can be made by check.

3. Will there be a cutoff for the 50K (or rather, what will be the cutoff time beyond which runners may not continue running if run not completed).

We will restrict it to 7 hours.

4. Can IITK provide any help in the logistics of putting up a) either somewhere in the Campus or b) recommend a suitable location not too far from the venue).

No. This will be too difficult since all the rooms on campus are booked
during that period.

5. What sort of refreshments can we expect on the route (water, any energy drinks or electral, bananas, etc?)

Water, electrolyte, bananas and oranges for sure. Other things will come
up as they go.

6. What is the route for the run, can you share something rough by drawing on mapmyrun or gmap-pedometer websites? What will be the loop distance.

The route will be 5 loops on campus. It is a completely flat course.

Tanvir:
I friend of mine currently at IITK is also planning to run it. Good luck with the race. I am in the final phase of my training for Houston Marathon on Jan 17th.

Cheers,
Neeraj
