News (source): The Pune International Marathon will be held on Sunday, 6th December 2009. It starts from Khandoji Baba Chowk, Deccan Gymkhana. The 42.195km route is designed in such a fashion that lakhs of spectators can line the route (funny, sic) and be an integral part of the event. Run Infinity Recommendation: Despite being in its 25th year of running, the Pune marathon continues to set new standards of mismanagement and poor runner support. The common man continues to be ignored, with focus just on getting the elite athletes to the finishing line.
Last I heard, the Mens marathon had a half-way cutoff of 1:30, you go out if you did not make it in time there. Also, one of the few races where the Marathon is for Men only, and Half marathon for Women only. Looks like these folks are still living in the early 1970s.
Another interesting incident which happened last year was when the lead vehicle went one way (the wrong way), and some other elite runners went the other way (also wrong), and it was total chaos with most of the top international finishers getting disqualified as a result. Real shame.
Another interesting point, in this age, this marathon is still to see online registrations, which even much smaller and newer runs are doing. Chip timing remains a distant dream too. So, in spite of everything, and all the history, there’s still a long way to go for this marathon.
Run Infinity suggests to skip this marathon and go for Mumbai Marathon a month later for India’s best organized marathon.
