Weekend preview: Bupa Great South Run, Marseille, Frankfurt Marathon 2009

October 24, 2009

Bupa Great South Run

2007 World marathon champion Luke Kibet, after a lean spell, is aiming to regain his BUPA Great South Run title in Portsmouth, UK, on Oct 25th. Kibet who was third last year returns to the English south coast venue next Sunday (25) for the 20th edition of the 10 Miles which he won two years ago.

In the Women’s race, two-time World Marathon champion and twice Olympic marathon silver medallist Catherine Ndereba will bid for the Bupa Great South Run title in this year’s race on Sunday 25 October. Ndereba, one of the world’s greatest ever distance runners and currently in great form, will bring her vast talent to the 10 miles road race in Portsmouth for the first time.

The BUPA Great South Run is an IAAF Gold label Road Race.

Marseille-Cassis “Classique Internationale” Marathon

Marseille-Cassis “Classique Internationale” will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Sunday 25 October. No less than 12,000 participants are going to line-up on the beautiful roads along the Mediterranean Sea.

Dieudonné Disi in his first participation in the event will be the favourite. Overcoming his disappointing performance at the World Championships Marathon in August (he withdrew at 28th km due to a pelvis displacement), the Rwandan has sailed from victory to victory in October. Disi will once again face his runner-up from the recent Paris and Reims races, Michael Tesfay of Eritrea. However, the main opposition might come from Kenyan Matthew Koech, who won the 25km in Berlin in May in the excellent time of 1:13:24.

The women’s race offers an expected duel between Kenyan Helah Kiprop and Ethiopian Meseret Mengistu. Kiprop, 24, is the logical favourite with two convincing wins in April at the Half Marathon distance (69:29 PB in Nice and 72:43 in Merano). She will be escorted on her task by two other Kenyans, Emily Rotich and Emily Jemutai.

Marseille-Cassis “Classique Internationale” is an IAAF Silver Label Road Race.

Frankfurt Marathon

The men’s elite field for this year’s Commerzbank Frankfurt Marathon on 25th October includes a remarkable number of 15 athletes with personal bests of sub 2:09. At the 28th edition of Germany’s oldest city marathon organisers expect a record entry of up to 13,000 runners.

Defending champion Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot will be back in Frankfurt. The Kenyan had caused one of the biggest sensations in marathon running in 2008, when he took the race at his debut clocking 2:07:21.

The women’s field, which had been announced recently, also is the strongest in the history of the event with Kenyans Rose Cheruiyot (2:25:48) and Agnes Kiprop (2:26:22) among the favourites.
