This years ING New York City Marathon is going to set a new benchmark in the word of marathon racing. For the record, this years race will have more that 40,000 runners to establish a new world record for the largest number of participants starting the race. More than 50% of the New York field comprises of International participants, another amazing and unique statistic.

Thirty-seven years after it was started in 1970, the New York City Marathon has now become the largest marathon anywhere in the world. (Wikipedia). The existing world record belongs to New York City too, the 2007 event which had 39,265 starters, and 38,607 finishers.
