The 24 year old Kenyan Gilbert Kirwa won the Commerzbank Frankfurt Marathon in a course record of 2:06:14. He beat his much fancied countryman and last year’s winner Robert Cheruiyot Kiprono to second place in 2:06:23.  William Kiplagat crossed the line in third place in 2:07:05.

Kiprono and Cheruiyot were locked up together running side by side since the kilometer 30 mark, but at KM 38, Kirwa finally pushed it to jump ahead and maintained the lead till the end of the race. The existing course record at Frankfurt belongs to Cheruiyot, who did a 2:07:21 in 2008 to set that record.

In the womens event, another Kenyan Agnes Kiprop won in 2:26:57 defeating Hellen Kimutai. Poland’s Karolina Jarzynska came third in 2:29:10. The current course record in the women’s event belongs to Russian Alevtina Biktimirova (2:25:12).

A total of 12,614 runners took part in the marathon. The race happened in nearly ideal weather conditions, partly cloudy, and a damp roads with no winds. Organizers had lined up one of the strongest lineups in the history of the event, both in mens and womens categories. Eleven women runners with personal bests under the 2:29, while 15 men with personal bests under 2:09 made the starting line.
