BUPA Great South Run 2009 Results: Mo Farah wins!

The BUPA Great South Run is a 10 mile run, and 26 year old Mo Farah has become the first Briton since 1996 to win this race outsprinting South Africa’s Scott Mokoka to the finish in a time of 46:25. Kenya’s Luke Kibet, a former marathon world champion was third. Farah became the first British man to win this event since Gary Staines won 13 years ago.

Mohammed “Mo” Farah is a British international track and field athlete of Somali origin. He currently holds the British indoor record in the 3000 metres. Farah later mentioned that he would like to have a crack at the marathon at Olympics in 2016, and his current priorities remained at shorter distances, particularly the 5000 meters at European championships at Barcelona.

Farah was as much as 25 yards back as early as 2 miles into the race, but kept steady pace and was able to catch up with the leader Mokoka with a mile to go. The last 150 meters, and a sprint to the finish decided the winner under quite windy conditions.

The womens race was won by Ines Monteiro of Portugal in a 52 minutes and 32 seconds.
Compatriot Ana Dulce Felix was second, more than a minute behind Monteiro indicating how big a lead Monteiro had in her win. Australian Benita Johnson was third. Claire Hallissey, who finished 25th at the World Half Marathon Championships a fortnight ago, was Britain’s top finisher in seventh. The much fancied
