Rotterdam Half Marathon 2009 Preview: Wanjiru leads the field

September 5, 2009

The 6th edition of the Fortis Half Marathon Rotterdam will be held on September 13th. The event boasts a flat and super fast course and this greatly reflects in the timings achieved over the past 5 years of the event.

2004 – Robert K. Cheruiyot runs the season best of 1:00:11

2005 – Sammy Wanjiru breaks Paul Tergat’s world record with 00:59:16

2007 – Evans Cheruiyot wins in a course record of 59:12
2008 – Six runners finished within an hour, Patrick Makau winning in 59:29

The event has a time limit of 2 hours 30 minutes for all the runners. It is interesting to see that Elite runners will start 50 minutes ahead of the other runners, just shows the level of importance the organizers give to the elites for this run.

Route Map (check pdf here): The course is a double-loop course as can be seen below.

Sammy Wanjiru faces tough opposition

Wanjiru, winner of the marathon at Beijing Olympics, the recently held London marathon, and holder of the world record for the half marathon in 58.33, will face some strong opposition at Rotterdam. Altogether, six athletes with a personal best of sub-60 have been roped in. Some of the key contenders he will be facing on Sep 13th are as follows, out of which Sammy Kitwara is being considered the most dangerous, and has already got five road races win this year:
