It was a great return to good times when Martin Lel of Kenya won his second BUPA Great North Run, officially the world’s largest half marathon and an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Lel, who is this year’s Lisbon Half Marathon winner, finished in a creditable time of 59:32, and in the process wiping 22 seconds off his personal best at the distance.
Lel had previously won this event in 2007, and for most part of this year had been struggling with injuries, but the comeback to form and fitness is probably now complete.
Kiplimo Kimutai of Kenya was second in 59:44, and Jaouad Gharib of Morocco third in 1:00:04 suffering from cramps in the later parts of the race. Lel’s time was the second fastest time ever at the Great North Run. He will now be targeting to give a strong performance at the New York City marathon (Nov 1st), where he is a two time winner, and will face two-time winner and defending champion Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil (winner 2006, 2008), Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa (winner 2004), Paul Tergat (winner 2005).
In the women’s race Portugal’s Jessica Augusto finished top with a personal best of 69:08. Ethiopia’s former champion Berhane Adere finished 34 seconds behind and Augusto’s team-mate Ana Dulce Rosa was third in a new personal best of 1:09:48.

I went to see this great event what my daughter was running in although she is not a runner and has only trained for 3weeks due to injury, she completed the run in 2hrs 30 excellent but a great credit to all the other runners who gave a fantastic performance in making this a world leading event. lets not forget the organisers and people who worked so hard in the setting up which was 1st class well done to all.Brian B Hull
