The Great Indian Desert Run TM is a footrace in the Thar desert of Rajasthan, India. The event starts on the 7th of September 2009 and will come to an end on the 14th of September 2009.
The location of the race is between 26o 18? N (Jodhpur), and 26o 55? N (Jaisalmer), and the altitude is between 150-300 metres above sea level. The terrain for the run will be sandy stretches, including dunes, and flat arid dry lands.
The timing of the race is towards the end of the monsoons; monsoons mark the time of the year when we experience most of our annual rainfall; although this part of the country goes without much rain. The average temperature in Rajasthan during this period is reported to be in the range of 70F-95F (21C-35C). The temperature variation between day and night may be significant.
The distance of the race will be 200-250 Km, and will be run in 6 stages spread over 6 days. The race route will be charted in June 2009 by the organizing team. The course may be GPS enabled. This will be confirmed only after the course has been marked. The route-map will be uploaded by 30th June 2009.
The race promises to be a challenging one and is envisaged as a gruelling test of character and resolve. The maximum capacity of the race is 75 runners.
