Day 5/6/7 updates:
Just back from Hyderabad after witnessing a great tournament. The finals day was a small letdown, with only the mens doubles providing the real thrill. Super Dan, Lu Lan and the other Chinese pairs kept their flag flying high, and Denmark was the only other team to snatch a title from the Chinese grasp, winning the mixed doubles finals easily. Semi finals were much more exciting, and Taufik, Sony Kuncoro, Jin Chen and Lin Dan providing plenty of excitement with some great action. Lee Chong Wei was a big letdown, just like in Indian Open Grand Prix Gold earlier this year, where I think he lost in the first round.

Day 4 updates:

  • Peter Gade, Lin Dan, Taufik, Wei, all march through to quarters, just in time for me to watch some great matches in Hyderabad
  • Team India: Chetan loses battle against Sony Kuncoro (6), and Saina wins a tough match in 3 sets. Diju/Jwala keep Indian flag flying high

Day 3 updates:

  • All top seeded players sail through, no upsets
  • Team India: Chetan and Saina have it easy!

Day 2 updates:

  • Big winners: Taufik Hidayat (4), Chen Jin (2)
  • Big losers: None
  • Team India: P Kashyap wins an easy game, Arvind Bhat goes down fighting hard

Day 1 updates:

  • Big winners: Lin Dan (5), Peter Gade (3), Lee Chong Wei (1)
  • Big losers: Bao Chunlai (11)
  • Indians crumble on day 1, Chetan Anand the sole survivor

My last trip to Hyderabad was in 2008 for the Indian Open Badminton, a Grand Prix Gold event, and which saw Chetan Anand reach the finals. Well, the next trip to Hyderabad in August this year is going to be really, really big. I guess this is as big as it gets in international badminton. I will be there on 14/15/16th August to see the matches quarter finals onwards.

The BWF World Championships are being held in Hyderabad from August 10-16th. The games from quarter-finals onwards will be played on 14-15-16 and that’s what I will be watching. With the recent victory of Saina Nehwal in the Indonesian Open Super Series, the expectations are high from her to do well. Besides the Indian contingent, it would be a delight to see the world’s best, the creme-de-la-creme. Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Taufik Hidayat, and well, the entire top ranked list should be present. I still cannot forget the way Lin Dan thrashed Lee Chong Wei in the Olympics finals, though Wei has had his revenge in a few tournaments since.

The tickets for the tournament are already available online at:

        http://www.ticketcounters.com/

though the seats being sold right now are only the premium category, and quite costly too, INR 6K for the last 3 days. I will wait some more to see the pricing for the other tickets.

Update: Following categories of tickets are now available online (earlier, they were selling Gold/Silver/Bronze, but Silver and Bronze seem to have gone now).

Grand Stand Gold Class Entire Season – Aug 10-16 Rs. 9,500

Deluxe Class
Entire Season – Aug 10-16 Rs. 3,500

Standard Class
Entire Season – Aug 10-16 Rs. 2,500

Also daily tickets are available under Deluxe and Standard class at Rs. 1000/- and Rs. 500/- quarter finals onwards (cheaper earlier). I wonder if Silver and Bronze became Deluxe and Standard, or whether these are two new categories of tickets.

Tickets in denominations of Rs. 150 can be bought outside the venue. The price for the semis and finals is said to be Rs. 250 for the same class of tickets. While I am also told that tickets in denominations of Rs. 300 (Rs. 500 for semis and finals) are also available, I was unable to find out where to buy it, even at the official ticket counter.

@Ravindra: Hmmm… they seem to have removed the daily tickets option, I wonder why. Keep checking daily on the website, they may be back again.
