It was a tale of two hugely popular marathons held on the same day. Both one of the best in Europe. While Paris is one of the biggest marathons of the world in terms of participation, Rotterdam can boast to be one of the fastest, with a three world records being set here over the years.

The 33rd Paris Marathon was won by 21 year old Vincent Kipruto of Kenya in a course record time of 2:05:47, breaking the former record of 2:06:33 set in 2003 by compatriot Mike Rotich. Reigning Paris half-marathon champion Bazu Worku of Eithopia was second in 2:06:15, with Kenyan David Kyeng third in 2:06:26. It was the fastest ever race in the history of this sport, with as many as 6 runners running under a time of 2:07 (equaling London 2008), and 11 under 2:09 (new record). A total of 35,000 runners took part in the event, run in cool weather with temperatures in the vicinity of 10 degrees Celsius. All top-10 mens finishers achieved the target cutoff time of 2:11:45 which entitled them to full prize money, while none of the womens achieved the full money time of 2:23:15.

This was one of the fastest ever marathons in history, with both the winner and runners up being awarded the same time of 2:04:27, which is just behind the two fastest times in marathon history, both belonging the legend Haile Gebresallasie. Kenyan Duncan Kibet was the winner just ahead of James Kwambai, also from Kenya. Haile Gebrselassie has the fastest two times of 2:03:59 and 2:04:26. Abel Kirui was third in 2:05:04 and Patrick Makau had a very impressive debut in 2:06:14, finishing fourth. Makau had won the recently held RAK half marathon in the second fastest ever time of 58:52.
