Asia’s biggest marathon, boasting a field of 35,000 runners, took place on a slightly cloudy day in Tokyo, with temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius and windy conditions. This was only the 3rd edition of the race, but it surely has picked up fast in popularity. This is also the first time in the history of marathons in Japan that prize money is being awarded. The strong head winds ensured a slower pace towards the end, and the overall race timings were slower than expected.

Here is a very detailed and interesting review of the run from a fellow blogger.
Nice photos from the event at letsrun.com.The runners had good feedback about the race … “Super long water stations with a big indicator 500m ahead which is impossible to miss / get dehydrated, unlimited food (banana, raisin, bread …) at dedicated supply points, volunteers / helpers every 50m (?) or so throughout the whole course, toilet and medical stations every 5km, smooth baggage handling, nice finisher’s towel and medal, etc. All are well organized, and you can see the huge effort & resources being put into the race”
Salim Kipsang from Kenya and Mizuho Nasukawa of Japan won the Mens and Womens events respectively. Kipsang won in 2:10:27, while two Japanese runners, Kazuhiro Maeda (running his first marathon) and Kensuke Takahashi took the second and third place in the mens event, beating established names like Sammy Korir.

In a related news, a man from Japan, Akinori Kusuda, 65 years, claimed to set a world record 52 consecutive marathons in 52 days, with Tokyo being the 52nd. See news here.
Another interesting bit, Tokyo marathon upped the participation limit to 35,000 this year, 5000 more than the last year. For these 35,000 slots, a total of 261,981people applied, which means 1 out of every 7.5 got selected. Last years number was 1 out of 4.7 applicants.
